Which Dogs are Hypoallergenic? (8 LOW SHEDDING DOGS)

Dogs are cuties, literally. They make great friends and companions that we have nicknamed them “canine babies”.

But an allergy can be a big obstacle to enjoying the snuggly feel and company of a pet, especially dogs that shed.

Although most dogs shed some amount of allergens, there are some species termed “hypoallergenic dog breeds” and will not trigger your allergies.

But, Which Dogs are Hypoallergenic?

A dog is considered hypoallergenic if it has a long hair growth cycle that prevents too much and too frequent shedding which causes the release of dander. This post has been written to show you the best hypoallergenic dogs and some things you should know about them.

Amazingly, these dogs do have hair.

List Of Hypoallergenic Dogs

It is important to establish a premise before I go on. The dogs I have picked for this guide are mostly small and medium-sized between 7 to 50 pounds in weight and 9 to 22 inches in height.

1. Poodle

Which Dogs are Hypoallergenic

Who doesn’t love a poodle? Those fluffy and cute creatures moving around your apartment; you’ll wonder if it can get any better.

A recent post reveals that poodles were the seventh most popular dog breed in the world in 2017. This French-German breed didn’t just get that ranking for their admirable look; they’re a good choice for allergen sufferers too.

Poodles, whether Toy, Miniature or Standard sized, are not just intelligent but are highly hypoallergenic. They do not easily shed (1). If you suffer from allergies, this might just be the right pet for you.

2. Shih Tzu

dogs that shed the least

This one is commonly called a lion dog in Chinese. In fact, that is what the name Shih Tzu originally means (1). It is a purebred, has a lifespan of 10-16 years and featured in the 2017 most popular dogs list.

Despite its fluffy almost wool-like hair, the Shih Tzu doesn’t shed or release dander that can trigger allergies and that’s great news if you’re a dog lover with allergies. There is a logical reason for this; the Shih Tzu has a hair-like fur, so even when they shed, the hairs get caught up in the coat’s second layer and doesn’t just fall off. (2).

3. Maltese Terrier

non shedding small dogs

Personally, I just love the white silky coats of the gorgeous Maltese Terrier. I know you do too. What’s more? Your allergies can’t stop you- well, except you’re specifically allergic to the Terrier breed.

Some people have called them the Roman ladies’ dogs for decades (1). Others say it can be traced to the Tibetan Terrier.

For the sake of clarity, Maltese Terrier is a breed mix between the Maltese breed and the Terrier. They are dependent and friendly and are one of the choices of dogs for the wealthy.

4. Tibetan Terrier

non shedding dog breeds

If you thought the Maltese Terrier has got hair, it’s because you haven’t seen a Tibetan Terrier. I personally call this dog the Rockstar due to its head hair that falls over his face. There are several Terriers out there but the video below should help you distinguish between the Tibetan and others.

While like many dogs referred to as hypoallergenic, the Tibetan Terrier does shed some hair, but very minimally. This is not enough to trigger your allergy if you have one.

If you have this, you have found yourself a very intelligent dog and quite playful too. With a lifespan of 12 to 17, just know you’ll be sharing a home with a very sensitive pet for a long time. (3).

5. Bichon Frise

small hypoallergenic dogs

This dog originates from both France and Spain (4). It is a small-sized purebred dog and a natural companion. Like many small dogs, it is non-sporting.

If you like feisty, intelligent, and affectionate pets and you need a dog that won’t trigger your allergies, this might just do it. Scratch what I said about wool earlier. This is the real wool you’ll almost forget it’s a dog you’re holding.

The Bichon’s hair continues to grow even though it doesn’t shed (5). One standout feature of the Bichon Frise is the coat that forms a circle around its head exposing the detailed black of the eyes, nose, and lips.

6. Samoyed

no shed dogs

Samoyed is a purebred Russian dog that is very alert and sociable but can be stubborn too. I guess it is Russian for a reason. It has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. Even though it sheds seasonally, the Samoyed is hypoallergenic due to its low dander level.

Its proteins are also less irritating to people who suffer from allergies and it doesn’t drool (6). The dog requires some grooming and caring. For instance, proper brushing will help remove mats and dead hairs from its coat. Fondly called Sammie, this is a strong dog that has good speed and likes to play.

7. Miniature Schnauzer

small hypoallergenic dog breeds

One reason I love this dog is the fact that it remains adorable throughout its lifetime. It remains a puppy forever. The Miniature Schnauzer is originally a German breed. It is a small, obedient, spirited, friendly, alert, and intelligent dog.

In fact, it was ranked number 12 on the list of most intelligent dogs and 18th among the world’s most popular dogs (7).

The MS is one of three Schnauzer dogs with a similar bearded snout and topcoat. It is also very easy to train them as they can learn very fast and become good companions for your hunting adventures. Perhaps, the most important information is that this dog is hypoallergenic.

It hardly sheds and therefore has little or no effect on people with allergies (8).

8. Portuguese Water Dog

low shedding dog breeds

The name says it all. This fluffy cutie originates from Portugal is a medium working dog and makes my list of which dogs are hypoallergenic. It is brave, obedient, intelligent, and can be stubborn and impetuous too.

You should know that the world’s most popular Portuguese water dog, Boo lived in the White House because Malia Obama had allergies (9). This dog is very adaptable, cat-friendly, and child friendly too. Plus it is one of the few pets around that are less likely to trigger an allergy.

They have a lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

Conclusion

I’m glad I’ve been able to share this post with you because I love dogs and I know you do too. I have seen friends and relatives suffer terrible allergies because of their choice of pets and I don’t want you to be a victim too.
